Many student discounts are just marketing tactics. A 10% discount often ends up being only 5% on items worth enjoying, with codes that expire too quickly and minimum spending requirements that cost you more than the savings. It's worth explaining why this particular discount stands out; its effectiveness comes from structural factors rather than mere generosity.
Where the money comes from
A delivery app in Cyprus takes twenty to thirty percent of every order it handles. That is not a fee on top: it comes out of the venue's side. A kitchen operating on the margins most kitchens do cannot absorb a third of its revenue, so it does the only thing available: it raises its prices on the app. You pay for the commission twice, once in the fee and once in the menu.
CyprusBites does not do delivery. You order ahead, you collect, you pay the venue directly, and nobody takes a cut of the food. The margin that used to go to the courier stays in the till.
That is the money the student discount is paid out of. It is not charity from the venue, and it is not a loss they are eating for exposure. It is a share of something they got back.
The two rules, and why they exist
At least fifteen percent. Below that, a discount is a marketing number rather than a reason to choose one place over another, so we do not list it. A venue that wants to take part agrees to fifteen percent or more, and some give more than that.
Takeaway only. This is the rule people ask about, and the answer is the paragraph above. The discount is funded by the margin a venue keeps when you collect. Sitting down is a different economy, with a table, service, and time, and pretending the same number applies there would be a promise somebody would refuse at the counter.
How the card proves you are a student
You verify with your university email address. We send a six-digit code to it; you type the code, and that is the whole check. We don't ask for a photograph of a student ID, a matriculation number, or a document with your home address.
The card then lives in your account and in Apple Wallet, carrying a code the venue scans. It expires at the end of the academic year, which is the honest length for something that says you are currently studying.
What the venue sees
When staff scan your card, they get one answer: valid, with your name and your institution. They do not get your email address, your order history, or anything else about you. They need to know the card is real, and that is all they are told.
What this is not
It is not a loyalty scheme, and taking part does not rank a venue higher anywhere on CyprusBites. No one can buy placement here, for anything. A venue that gives students twenty percent appears where it would have appeared anyway, with a badge saying what it gives.
