Tucked away in the mountain village of Kakopetria, Paok Kakopetrias is a family-run taverna where the owner and her daughters serve tables themselves. The kitchen turns out traditional Cypriot dishes in generous portions, from grilled souvlaki and sheftalia to lamb chops and sea bass, all cooked home-style rather than for show. The menu is written only in Greek, and staff are happy to explain dishes or even translate for visitors, giving diners an authentic, unpolished taste of local life away from the tourist trail. It is especially popular with Cypriot families and regulars, so tables fill up fast on busy evenings and service can slow to a crawl under pressure. Come with patience, an appetite, and a willingness to point at other people's plates if the language barrier gets in the way, and you will likely leave full and impressed by the honest, home-cooked flavours.
