Carved over millions of years by the Avgas (Avakas) River, this striking gorge in the Akamas Forest near Peyia is one of Paphos district's most rewarding nature trails. The linear route leads you between soaring limestone walls that narrow dramatically, following a creek you'll criss-cross many times over smooth, water-worn rocks. Along the way, keep an eye out for wild goats, lizards, pigeons and rare tree species, all shaded by the canyon's high cliffs.
It's a genuinely wild, free experience that families with children enjoy, though the going can be slippery — proper trail shoes are strongly recommended, and the far end steepens toward rock-scrambling. Multiple free parking areas sit at varying distances from the trailhead, and near the start you'll find a small shop selling cold drinks, ice cream and fresh fruit, plus toilets and a drinking-water station. The trail is largely unmarked, so downloading a GPS track before you set off is wise. Morning visits reward you with quieter paths and beautiful green surroundings, especially in spring.
