The real story: why CyprusBites cannot lie to you

A letter from the team, August 2026

Every platform says it is honest. We decided saying it was not enough, so we built ours in a way that would have to be rewritten to lie. This is the real story of CyprusBites, told the way we would tell it to a friend at a taverna table.

The problem we refused to accept

When you order food through a delivery app in Cyprus, twenty to thirty percent of what you pay never reaches the kitchen. It goes to a platform, for the privilege of a listing and a courier. Small tavernas raise their prices to survive it, or they quietly shrink the portions, or they just earn less for the same work. Everybody loses a little, every day, and everybody has learned to call it normal.

We did not want to build a better version of that. We wanted to build the opposite of it: a place where you order ahead, walk in, pay the venue directly, and the venue keeps every cent of the food. No commission on anyone's dinner. Not a launch offer. The architecture.

Honesty as engineering, not marketing

Here is what "honest by design" actually means in our code, with real examples:

The empty boast deletes itself. When we write to a venue owner and our letter is meant to include their real numbers, like how many times Google showed their page last month, the system checks the numbers first. A venue with nothing true to say gets the whole sentence removed, automatically. The software refuses to pad.

Open rates are labelled "weather, not truth." Our own marketing reports mark email opens as unreliable, because they are, and lean on clicks and replies, because those are real. We built the caution into the page an employee sees, not into a disclaimer nobody reads.

"Worth trying" means it, or the shelf goes empty. The recommendations on our pages come only from venues that actually qualify in your district. When there are not enough, we show fewer. We never pad a shelf with filler to look busy.

Reviews and photos are what they are. A venue's page shows real guest words and real rooms. Where we have nothing genuine, we show nothing, because an invented compliment is worse than silence.

Venues answer you directly

CyprusBites is not a middleman that holds both ends of the conversation. When you request a table, the venue answers you. When you order ahead for pickup, you pay at the counter, to the person who cooked. When a venue owner claims their page, it is free, and it stays free, and no venue can ever pay us to rank higher. Ranking is earned with real data: real hours, real menus, real answers to real guests.

For owners, we go one step further: we show you your numbers. How many people saw your page, what they searched to find you, what happened after. Receipts, not promises. If working with us does not visibly work for you, we want you to see that too.

Built here, for here

CyprusBites speaks Greek, English, German and Russian, because Cyprus does. It knows that Zygi means fish, that Sunday means souvla, that a taverna in Kathikas with a view deserves to be found by the person searching for exactly that. It was built on this island, for this island, by people who eat at these tables.

And one more piece of honesty, because it belongs in a story about honesty: CyprusBites is built by a very small team working with serious technology, shipping improvements daily, sometimes twenty in a day. When you write to us, a real person reads it, and the whole conversation stays in one place where you can always find it.

Where we are, honestly

We are at the beginning. A few hundred venues are listed, the first owners are claiming their pages, and our first members found us without a single advertisement, which we take as the best compliment we have received. Some things will break; when they do, we will fix them the same day and say so.

If you own a venue: your page may already exist. Claiming it is free and takes a minute, and what you get on day one is a website that updates itself when you update your menu once, takes real table requests, and speaks four languages.

If you eat, and you live here or you are visiting: use us to find your next table, order ahead, pay the taverna, and keep the twenty percent where it belongs, in the kitchen that fed you.

That is the whole story. No asterisks.
