Some venues hand you a return perk at the bill. Claim it to your account and it lives in your passes with the reward, the venue, the code and how long is left, so it cannot be lost.
A pass is the venue asking you back, with something real attached. The value is scaled to the visit that earned it and capped by the venue.
It is worth more in that venue's quiet window, and the boost is worked out when you redeem rather than when it is issued, so a deeper discount only ever fills an empty table.
Once you have proven a return, the venue's next pass to you tends to become a perk rather than more money off. That is the venue keeping its own margin while still thanking you.
Every pass is single use and expires. Redeeming one needs the venue to scan it on a real visit, so it cannot be farmed.
