Set in the village of Kouklia near Paphos, the Archaeological Site of Palaepaphos was one of antiquity's most famous cult centres of Aphrodite, whom legend links to nearby Petra tou Romiou. Spanning the Late Bronze Age through Greek, Roman and Lusignan periods, the compact site rewards curious explorers with 10 to 15 areas to wander, including shaded mosaics with English explanations, a theatre and scattered ruins. A small on-site museum houses further artefacts, and a short film helps visitors piece together the history.
Helpful, welcoming staff are on hand to explain the exhibits. Entry is €4.50 with free parking, and admission is free for young children and visitors over 65. Quiet in the early morning and off-season, it offers a peaceful, almost spiritual atmosphere and lovely surrounding views.
Allow roughly 20 to 40 minutes, and pair your visit with Aphrodite's Rock a short drive away for a fuller mythological day out. An essential stop for lovers of history and Cypriot mythology.
