Ten digits on the front of your card. The QR answers a camera, the number answers a person. It is what you read out when nobody can scan, and what a venue asks for when a rate belongs to you rather than to the bill.
The number belongs to you and not to the card, because a card can be replaced and you have not changed.
It identifies and authorises nothing. Giving it to a venue says who you are. It spends nothing and opens nothing.
It is the answer wherever a discount attaches to a person rather than to a bill. The student rate on a takeaway order is the first of those.
Because the last digit is arithmetic rather than a choice, a mistyped number cannot be mistaken for somebody else's. It is simply refused.
